Four Killed in Boating Accident

On Friday, July 15, a boating accident has left four people missing.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, the accident happened on Lake Lanier, when a cigarette type boat, between 38 to 40 foot long, which is like a racing power boat, was traveling southbound near Cocktail Cove. It then overturned shortly before 4 p.m. although it is not thought there was any collision with another boat.

The four people on board were missing and a search was begun involving the DNR, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, and the Hall County Fire Department. However, heavy boating traffic and waves created dangerous conditions for the divers so officials began using SONAR technology to search underwater after dark.

On Saturday, the bodies of 45 year old Melissa Renee McMahan, of Mount Washington, Ky., and 44 year old Tammy Reece, of Columbia, Ky., were located. Still missing are 46 year old Arthur Gene McMahan Jr., of Mount Washington, Ky. and 44 year old Anthony Reece Jr., of Columbia, Ky.

The DNR critical reconstruction team will lead the investigation, and try to ascertain what mechanical or other factors led to the boat overturning. The boat will need to be examined but at present it is still under the water.
