Our Atlanta brain injury attorneys understand brain injury and how it can affect your future. We are here to help you collect the full compensation that you will need in the years to come living with brain injury.
Causes of Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is usually the result of a head injury, but not always. A body blow or extreme force can cause the brain to slam into the inside of the skull, or cause tearing of the nerves in the brain, without a direct blow to the head. We see this in whiplash, shaken baby syndrome, and some sports injuries.
The most common cause of TBI is falling. According to the CDC, falls are responsible for more than 40% of TBI.
Anoxic brain injury occurs when the brain receives no oxygen, and hypoxic brain injury occurs when the brain receives some, but not enough, oxygen.
In some accidents a person can suffer both TBI and anoxic or hypoxic brain injury. For instance, in a swimming pool accident the victim may slip and fall, hitting her head before subsequently suffering near-drowning. Or, a car accident victim may suffer hypoxic brain injury from severe blood loss, while having also suffered TBI in the crash.
Accidents that commonly cause brain injuries include:
- Slip and fall
- Falls in nursing homes
- Other nursing home accidents such as choking
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Motorcycle accidents
- Bicycle accidents
- Pedestrian accidents
- Criminal assaults and attacks, including those resulting from negligent security
- Fires and explosions
- Construction accidents
- Industrial accidents
- Electric shock
- Heavy equipment accidents
- Playground accidents
- Sports injuries
- Pharmaceutical injury
- Near-drowning
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Accidents involving defective products
