Fatal Crash in Brookhaven Leaves Two Dead

Early on Sunday morning, December 18, there was a fatal crash in Brookhaven.

According to the Georgia State Patrol the accident happened shortly before 7 a.m. when five people were in a car that was heading down Clairmont Road at Century Center when it hit a tree.

A passenger died at the scene, 21 year old Fernando Mares of Forest Park. The other four people in the car were taken to area hospitals. On the way to Atlanta Medical Center, 19 year old Marissa Mata- Munoz of Forest Park, also died.

The other three who were critically injured were the driver, 19 year old : Diego Sanchez-Reyes of Conley, 18 year old Abel Rodriguez of Forest Park, and 18 year old Rogelio Alvarado-Resendez also of Forest Park. They were all taken to Grady hospital where their current conditions are unknown

Officials with the Georgia State Patrol say they believe speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.

Two People Killed and Three Critical Following Serious Accident

On Saturday night, November 5, two people were killed and three others critically injured after a serious accident in Jonesboro, Clayton County

According to police, the accident happened at around 8.20 p.m. on Tara Boulevard at the intersection with Mundy’s Mill. Police responded to calls about an accident but found two people already dead at the scene in one vehicle. They were identified as 49 year old Bennie Fuller of Grantville and 16 year old Morgan Cleaves of Jonesboro. Three people in the other vehicle suffered critical injuries and were rushed to area hospitals for treatment where their conditions are unknown.

The exact circumstances of the accident are not known but the Clayton County Special Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Unit was called in to take over the investigation. The names of those injured have not yet been released.

Teenage Driver in Fatal Accident

On Tuesday, October 18, a teenage driver was in a fatal accident in Atlanta.

According to authorities, the accident happened at around 6.30 a.m. when 16 year old Terrell King of Stone Mountain lost control of a Dodge Journey when traveling at high speed. He crashed the vehicle into mail boxes and trees before the car became airborne and took down power lines before landing on top of a house. King was ejected onto the front lawn of another house.

The vehicle had been stolen the Sunday before, October 16, around five miles from the crash site.

He was taken to the hospital and was first said to be in stable condition. However King died of his injuries on Wednesday, the day after the crash. No one else was injured in the crash.

Police hope that this will be a lesson for teens as to the dangers of stealing vehicles and driving them at top speed.

Rapper Dies in Single Vehicle Car Crash

Early on Wednesday morning, September 21, famous Atlanta rapper Carlos “Shawty Lo” Walker died in a single vehicle car crash in Fulton County, Georgia.

According to police, the accident happened when the rapper was driving south on Interstate 285 in his white Audi and for reasons as yet unknown the vehicle left the roadway, flew over a guardrail, hit trees and then burst into flames.

Walker, aged 40 was driving and he was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. There were two female passengers in the car and they were taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Walker first became famous in 2005 when he was member of the rap group D4L whose “Laffy Taffy” topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005.

Walker then began a solo career that included another hit, “Dey Know,” from his 2008 solo album Units in the City and was named Rookie of the Year at the 2008 BET Hip-Hop Awards.

He was also infamous for having 11 children with 10 different women.

Teen Killed in Seven Car Crash

On Saturday morning, August 20, a teen from Locust Grove was killed in a seven car crash in McDonough.

According to Henry County police the accident happened on Interstate 75 northbound near Georgia Highway 20 at around 10.30 a.m. when 18 year old Summer Ann Lee was driving and was struck in the rear by a tractor trailer being driven by Daniel Crane of Jernez Springs, New Mexico. Lee’s car was then pushed into five other vehicles.

Lee was killed in the crash and another seven people were taken to Atlanta Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Crane was arrested at the scene and charged with vehicular homicide, following too closely and commercial vehicle hours of service violations. According to Police neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have been involved but the accident is still under investigation.

Four Killed in Boating Accident

On Friday, July 15, a boating accident has left four people missing.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, the accident happened on Lake Lanier, when a cigarette type boat, between 38 to 40 foot long, which is like a racing power boat, was traveling southbound near Cocktail Cove. It then overturned shortly before 4 p.m. although it is not thought there was any collision with another boat.

The four people on board were missing and a search was begun involving the DNR, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, and the Hall County Fire Department. However, heavy boating traffic and waves created dangerous conditions for the divers so officials began using SONAR technology to search underwater after dark.

On Saturday, the bodies of 45 year old Melissa Renee McMahan, of Mount Washington, Ky., and 44 year old Tammy Reece, of Columbia, Ky., were located. Still missing are 46 year old Arthur Gene McMahan Jr., of Mount Washington, Ky. and 44 year old Anthony Reece Jr., of Columbia, Ky.

The DNR critical reconstruction team will lead the investigation, and try to ascertain what mechanical or other factors led to the boat overturning. The boat will need to be examined but at present it is still under the water.

Accident in Cobb County Kills Two Adults and Injures Four Children

Early on Monday morning, June 20 two adults were killed and four children seriously hurt in an accident in Cobb County.

According to Cobb County Police a green 1998 Honda Passport driven by 27 year old Katrina E. Morris of Powder Springs, was traveling west on Clay Road approaching Flint Hill Road in Mableton when for reasons as yet unknown, she lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway, colliding with a tree on the northern shoulder.

Morris and a front seat male passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene.

In the back seat were four children aged from an infant to 10 years old and they were all seriously injured and taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite for treatment.

The accident is still under investigation but according to witnesses there have been several accidents in the same spot.

Pregnant Woman Hit and Killed at Bus Stop

On Thursday, May 26, a pregnant woman was hit and killed at a bus stop in southwest Atlanta.

According to Atlanta police, the accident happened just before 5 p.m. when 22 year old Keanna Shields was waiting at the bus stop at Amal Drive and Pryor Road.

A white Toyota pickup, being driven north on Pryor Road by 58 year old Eddie Haynie suddenly lost control. He did not stop at the intersection with Amal drive and collided with a Chevrolet Suburban and then ran off the road and hit Shields who was dragged by the pickup into a field behind the bus stop. The truck stopped at the tree line and Haynie was found unresponsive on the floor on the passenger side and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Shields and her unborn child, a girl who was due in July, were declared dead at the scene. She had only been married for two weeks and was planning her baby shower for the following Saturday.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation and police are working to determine what caused Haynie to drive so erratically.

Three Young Boys Hit by an Impaired Motorist

On Friday, April 15 three young boys were hit by an impaired motorist in northwest Atlanta.

The incident happened near Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and Mayson Turner Road. Ryan Lisabeth, aged 28 of Canton was driving along the road when it is alleged he plowed into three children who were walking along the sidewalk. He then attempted to drive away.

Isaiah Ward, aged 9 was rushed to hospital but taken off life support on Sunday afternoon and died. His 11 year old brother Roland is in hospital with a broken pelvis. A third child, 12 year old Timothy Hood is also in hospital although his condition is unknown.

Lisabeth has a long criminal history including three DUI convictions and drug charges relating to cocaine and heroin as well as an open DUI case. He now faces many more charges including including vehicular homicide in the first degree, driving under the influence of heroin and possession of heroin. He has been denied bond and more severe charges are being considered.

Crash Between a Dirt Bike and a Car

On Friday, March 18 a crash between a dirt bike and a car Friday in southwest Atlanta left one person dead and two people injured.

According to the Georgia State Patrol the accident happened at the intersection of Whitehall Street and McDaniel Street. A dirt bike was traveling northbound on McDaniel Street, went through the intersection at Whitehall Street and hit a Hyundai Sonata on the driver’s side.

The dirt bike driver and two people inside the Sonata were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. The dirt bike driver died at the hospital but his or her and age was not released. The conditions of the people inside the Sonata were not known.

A witness to the accident said the crash came at the end of a police chase although that has not been confirmed.

The crash remains under investigation.
